7 Tips for Better Writing Web Content
There is a lot of advice on how to write web content that is available on the Internet.
Unfortunately, most of them are difficult to apply.
Indeed, it takes weeks, even months, to learn how to use the metaphors, the narration and all other subtleties of the French language.
That’s not what I want to teach you today!
Laurent often has constructive remarks about my prose. That’s what he told me the other day:
The main goal of a business leader is to win new customers. Those who do it by publishing web content also want to save time on all aspects of writing!
Well, if that’s your case, you’re very lucky to have come across this article.
In this article, I give you 7 easy-to-use tips that will make reading your web content easier. Also, it only takes a few seconds to learn and apply them.
So, how to learn to write?
1. Abuse line breaks
When writing to communicate on paper, each extra line costs money.
But on the Internet, we do not have the same constraints when it comes to writing web content.
That’s why to write for the web, you can and you have to use the “Enter” key as you wish.
There are 2 main ways to use a line break.
Cut out paragraphs
Make shorter paragraphs.
Put forward only one, two or three (sic) ideas per paragraph. Then start your paragraph with the most difficult idea to understand and continue with the following idea (s).
Thus, any reader who browses your text will automatically understand that you are approaching a new idea. It’s unconscious and everyone understands it very quickly.
Focus on a particular point
If you have an idea that you want to highlight, add a line break at the end. Thus, you unconsciously give him more weight. And at the same time, it improves the effectiveness of your purpose.
2. Make short sentences
Learn to make short sentences.
Short sentences make it much easier to understand web content.
Therefore, if you use shorter sentences, you make your text much easier to read and understand.
Do you want to know which sentences are too long?
Use the free Yoast extension for WordPress. It’s free.
In addition to his valuable advice on SEO, it highlights your difficult (or even really difficult) sentences to understand, as well as to report other problems.
Bonus: Yoast also notes your content which determines the level that your readers need to have to understand you.
3. Convince more easily with the 3-point rule
I do not know exactly why, but we all like the number 3.
For example :
- The 3 points of suspension,
- It’s a Belgian, an American and a Frenchman who buy a car …
- The good, the bad and the ugly…
You noticed: I gave 3 examples!
Use this simple rule in your writing:
- Use 3 words,
- Give 3 examples,
- Add 3 adjectives …
Of course, you must be wary of abusing it.
But if you list choices in the form of lists, then without hesitation try to report at least 3!
4. Never assume that your first draft is good
Do you know the difference between a normal author and an excellent author?
It is the facility to be able to modify one’s work.
No one can write a perfect text the first time.
Besides, writing content for the web that reads easily is extremely difficult. It requires a lot of effort and time.
To learn how to write for the web, you must modify your text several times:
- Remove superfluous words,
- Refine the good ideas that are not highlighted enough,
- Cut out your sentences, …
Then change it again. In short, separate the wine from its lees.
It’s indeed extra work. But this is the only way to make your text more readable and convincing.
There is also another benefit: By learning to re-read your content, you will progress as an editor for the web.
Force yourself to identify what you could write differently and you will start doing it automatically.
5. Involve others
As an editor, it is essential that you talk to others about your writing.
So why not use them to improve your writing style?
Engage with other writers and ask them to correct you.
In principle, this will give you valuable advice and you will also create a relationship with other bloggers – which can be extremely useful elsewhere, especially for obtaining backlinks.
But to write better, do not stop there.
You can also improve your writing with your contacts on social networks. So try to federate a network of people on the many social platforms that you regularly meet.
6. Identify good reviews
It is extremely easy to criticize a text.
Raw foundry remarks are not constructive. They can even be hurtful.
So, how to react to criticism?
First of all, it is out of the question not to take it into account. Because you will lose a valuable source of remarks to improve you.
Instead, I advise you to ignore most and keep only those that are repeated, especially if it comes from different people.
In this case, start paying attention.
If after reading several different articles, someone tells you:
- “You use too much jargon”,
- “Your sentences are too short,”
- Or “your language is too poor” …
then surely you need to review your text to make it clearer or use more appropriate words.
In this way, you only consider useful comments that will make you a better copywriter.
7. Take a step back before publishing Web Content
I know it may be:
- Trying to write at the last minute,
- Enervating to have to hear that a third person has time to reread you,
- Frustrating not to put online immediately.
Instead, let “rest” your text for a few hours (or even a few days).
So you will step back and forget what you just wrote. And you can focus on what you wrote.
By giving a few hours of respite to your text, you will more easily distinguish typing errors and other grammatical errors that may slip sneakily.
In this way, you will learn to correct yourself. You will also make fewer mistakes because your eye will practice chasing them.
My advice: write your text a day before publication, then “sleep” on it. The next day, read it twice before pressing the “publish” button:
- The first time to check the consistency and clarity of your text,
- And the second to focus only on spelling
It is not so difficult!
To conclude on how to write web content
Here’s the bad news: writing web content is a skill.
Like any skill, you must practice it again and again to progress.
These quick tips to put in place will not make you an excellent author. But they can help.
And in doing so, you will have fun when you write, and even make you write more often.
